Popular video channel, YouTube recently released the list of the top ten Nigerian artistes with the highest views online. Here goes:
#10. Flavour – 36.1 million views
Flavour Na’abania is the undisputed king of Igbo hip-hop/rap music. He stands as perhaps the most unique and talented rapper amongst artistes that rap in indigenous languages. His all-time hit song, ‘Ada-Ada’ earned him a spot on this list. The video of the song is a typical description of the manner and procedure of traditional wedding ceremonies in Igboland. This song endeared him to the hearts of many individuals, especially the Igbos, given the fact that it contained several elements of their culture.
The video has been viewed approximately 36.1 million times on YouTube, making Flavour the tenth most-viewed Nigerian artiste on YouTube.
#9. Mr. Eazi – 47.9 million views
Ninth on the list of the Nigerian artistes with the most YouTube views is Mr. Eazi. He achieved this feat by the help of his hit song, ‘Leg Over’, which single-handedly garnered over 47.9 million views.
Even though his music inclinations were criticized by music enthusiasts at the start of his career, he has managed to find a way into their hearts. His unique infusion of Nigerian and Ghanaian elements makes him stand out from his contemporaries, therefore his inclusion on this list is really no surprise. His ‘Leg Over’ video which earned him this spot was one of the best at the time of release.
#8. Chidinma – 56.6 million views
This one-time MTN Project Fame winner is perhaps the last person anyone would expect to feature in such a list as this, due to the fact that she hasn’t been as active as her peers in the music industry. Nonetheless, just when people thought she was on her way out of the scene, she released a hot new single titled ‘Fallen In Love’. The song was a total blast, and the video itself was a massive success. It reached 56.6 million views on YouTube in a little while.
#7. WizKid Ayo – 72.4 million views
In his song ‘Come closer’, WizKid featured ace American/Canadian rapper Drake – though he was absent in the music video. Nonetheless, the video garnered as many as one million views within an hour of being released. The hype surrounding the song was just too intense, being aided by the inclusion of Drake. So far, the video has been viewed more than 72.4 million times.
The song was an excellent combination of afro-pop and dancehall beat.
#6. Korede Bello – 80.01 million views
Korede Bello became an instant hit with his song titled ‘God-Win’. Till date, quite a number of people do not know that he has released other songs that have even made much more impact than ‘God-Win’. Soon after he released that song, he came up with another titled ‘Do Like That’. This song’s success and popularity emphatically dwarfed that of God-Win. Numerous audio and TV stations aired the song regularly, and the video amassed a total of 80.01 million views on YouTube.
#5. RunTown – 84.3 million views
RunTown first broke into the limelight with his hit song ‘Gallardo’, in which he featured Davido and SoundGod. The song drew widespread applause from all corners of the music industry, and RunTown became an instant sensation. He followed up his success with ‘Gallardo’ by releasing other tracks, all of which have fared well in the industry. However, he achieved his biggest success to date with the song ‘Mad Over You’. The music video was shot and released not long after the audio. So far, it has been viewed approximately 84.3 million times on YouTube, making him the fifth most viewed Nigerian artiste on the video channel.
#4. P-Square – 88.3 million views
Even though there is a lot of controversy rocking the Okoye brothers, they were indeed a force to reckon with while they were still together. One of their best songs till date is titled ‘Personally’, and the video amassed a total of 88.3 million views on YouTube. Other tracks like ‘Collabo’ and ‘Shekini’ recorded 68.2 million views and 65 million views respectively.
#3. Tekno – 93.5 million views
Tekno recorded huge success in his career when he released the music videos of two of his most popular songs, namely ‘Where?’ and ‘Duro’. Both videos amassed YouTube views of 38.2 million and 58.6 million respectively. Nonetheless, Tekno was not done with impressing his fan base. His song ‘Pana’ smashed his previous record by recording a total of 93.5 million views on YouTube.
#2. Yemi Alade – 101.4 million views
The second most-viewed Nigerian artiste on YouTube is none other than Yemi Alade. Her song, ‘Johnny’ is an all-time classic, having being viewed at least 101.4 million times on YouTube – despite being about five years old.
#1. Davido – 115.8 million views
Davido’s fan base in Nigeria and abroad is one of the widest. Millions of people over the world follow his music and daily activities, so it’s easy to see why occupies the top spot on this list. His song ‘Fall’ has been viewed a whopping 115,854,950 times on YouTube, making him the most-viewed Nigerian artiste online.
As at today, March 7, 2019, these are the most viewed Nigerian artistes on YouTube. At some point in time, the dynamics may change, and another artiste may overtake Davido as the most viewed Nigerian artiste on YouTube. Irrespective of what may happen, nothing changes the fact that that Davido once held that position of Nigeria’s most-viewed artiste on YouTube.
