Here’s a very common question on the lips of fans of Nigerian singer and songwriter, Aituaje Aina Iruobe– How old is Waje?
The multi-award winning vocalist and diva was born on September 1, 1980. Popularly known as Waje (an acronym for “Words aren’t just enough”), she is a Nigerian whose vocal range covers three octaves.
Born in Akure, Ondo State and then moved to Benin City, Edo State by her parents before their divorce, Waje started singing when she joined the choir. She once sang gospel tunes to the admiration of the late Benson Idahosa of Church of God Int. when she was a young singer. Archbishop Benson was so marveled at the gift he saw in the young Waje that he decided to help her throughout her whole secondary school days.
Her love for humanity led her to study Social Work at The University of Nigeria, Nsukka. To demonstrate her love for music, Waje focused on her musical works such as school concerts and fellowship during her school years. Undeterred, Waje kept trying to improve her music by listening and learning from her mentors such as Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin.
Eventually, she came into limelight in 2008 when she was featured in the P-Square hit track titled “Do Me”. The track was widely known across Africa and helped give her career a little boost. Never one to look back, Waje participated in Advanced Warning (a reality TV show for musicians on the edge of a breakthrough) in which she emerged first runner-up.
Since then, this multi-talented singer has released lots of beautiful songs and won lots of awards. As at February 2017(at the time of writing this article), Waje is 36 years old.
