Nigerian senators, without doubt, are among the highest paid civil servants in the country. When talking of the richest people in Nigeria, our politicians especially these senators first cross the mind. Controversies have always been on how much exactly do they earn as their basic salary with their allowances.
Here is just a breakdown of their earnings in Naira
Basic Salary– 2 484 245.50
Hardship allowance– (50% of B.S) 1 242 122.70
Domestic staff– (75% of B.S) 1 863 184.12
Entertainment– (30% of B.S) 828 081.83
Recess allowance (50% of B.S) 1 242 122.70
Accommodation allowance (200% of B.S) 4 968 509.00
Personal assistance-(25% of B.S) 621 061.37
Constituency allowance (200% of B.S) 4 968 509.00
Utilities– (30% of B.S) 828 081.83
Vehicle maintenance– (75% of B.S) 1 863 184.12
Leave allowance– (10% of B.S) 248 424
Severance gratuity (300% of B.S) 7 452 736
All the allowances listed above does not include their quarterly constituency allowances, the money spent on getting them vehicles and their news paper allowance.
Comparing these figures with what senators of other countries earns, we found our own senators earning more than twice of other countries senators’ salary. If such great amount is spent on the salaries of very few individuals to the detriment of other Nigerians, then our hope for a better Nigeria is stumbling
The most pathetic of the situation is that, despite the excessive payment, we still have many of them embezzling money. When shall we have a corrupt free system where our leader will be considerate on us.
