The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), is a public University located in Owerri, specifically in Ihiagwa municipal, Owerri, in Imo state, Eastern Nigeria. It is the first tertiary educational institution to be established in the south-south and south-eastern regions of Nigeria.

Also known as FUTO, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri was founded in the year 1980, and was committed to the care and leadership of Professor U.D. Gomwalk, who was the first Vice-chancellor of the institution. The current vice-chancellor of the school is a one-time Dean of the University’s School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, Professor Francis Chukwuemeka Eze.

Currently, the university boasts of a total student population of well over 22,000 persons; while the academic and administrative staff strength stands at close to 1,000 persons, including some 50 professors.

FUTO Admissions:

FUTO Admission Requirements

Students seeking admission into FUTO are required to follow the instructions provided by JAMB in the brochure, an annual publication by the organization. All information related to admission requirements are made available in this document.

Generally, under normal circumstances, an ideal candidate is required to have the satisfactory examination scores (e.g. minimum of 180 for UTME), as well as a minimum of 5 credits in related subjects before he/she can be offered admission. He or she must also meet the requirements of the department being applied to.

Once all is settled, the applicant will then be invited to apply for admission, and during the season of admissions intake, the procedure is usually published on either the school’s website (, or in national dailies, or in both and more outlets.


FUTO POST UTME Application Information

Candidates who choose Federal University of Technology, Owerri as First Choice University in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are usually invited to apply for an aptitude test, provided such candidates scored a minimum of 180 in their UTME. Those who did not choose FUTO as First Choice University but scored a minimum of 180 in their UTME are also eligible to apply.

As part of the application, candidates are usually required to pay a token fee for registration and then fill in their details on the school portal, after which they will be informed of the date to come for an admissions’ screening exercise.
