The lifestyles of celebrities are always of keen interest to their fans and enemies alike. Many information, facts, and lessons can be gleaned from their life stories, career paths, and sojourn into stardom. One such individual who rose to fame within a short time is Folarin Falana, also known as ‘Falz The Bad Guy.’ in this post, we explore his biography, his age, height, net worth, early years, career path, personal life, and his songs so far.
Firstly, who is Falz?
Folarin Falana a.k.a. Falz the Bahd Guy was born on the 27th of October 1990 in Mushin, Lagos state to the family of renown lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN) and Funmi Falana (who also happens to be a lawyer and activist). He is currently 29 years old and stands at 1.80 meters. His early childhood was spent in Lagos, Nigeria. He attended Saint Leo’s Catholic Primary School, Lagos, and the popular Olashore International School in Osun state, Nigeria. He proceeded to the prestigious University of Lagos (UNILAG) where he studied Law; after which he attended the Abuja Law School. He graduated from Law School in the year 2012, but rather than delve right into full-time legal practice, Falz proceeded to the University of Reading, England, to study a master’s degree in Law. He graduated with honours.
All through his forays into education and legal studies, Falz nurtured a burning passion for music. He started his music career officially in the year 2009 with a band he formed with some of his friends at school. While still unknown, he and his band (named ‘The School Boys’) released a mixtape titled ‘Shakara.’ However, he would remain relatively unknown until the year 2011 when he released his first single titled “Wazup Guy.” Other singles he released in 2011 include ‘Currency’ and ‘High class.’ These made him more popular, and his journey to stardom began here.
The year 2015 can be aptly described as his breakout year. He released his second album titled ‘Stories that Touch’, and also featured in popular comedy sitcom Jenifa’s Diary. His role as ‘Segun’ won him the award for the Best Actor of the Year, and he also won the Viewer’s Choice Award for the Best New Act (international) at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. In 2016, he was nominated for the BET Awards in the category of ‘Best International Act’, and since then it has been a journey from one new level of awards, recognition, and fame to another.
Since he started his music career in 2009, Falz has released many songs that have won awards both within and outside the country. After his first mixtape in 2011, he went fully into Rap music. In 2015, he released a song titled ‘Marry Me’ in which he featured Yemi Alade and talented musician Poe. The song gradually became a fans’ favourite, and it eventually won him the Best Collaboration of the Year award at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. In the same year, his song ‘Hello Bae’ won him the award of Best Street Hop Artiste of the year. In 2016 again, he collaborated with hip hop star Simi on a song they titled ‘Chemistry.’ This song is one of several songs that the pair have done together. Other popular songs that they did together include ‘Soldier’ and ‘Jamb Question’, among others. In fact, at the time of their collaboration, there were rumours of a love affair involving the two of them, due to the intensity of the chemistry that was obvious between them in their music videos.
In 2017, he released a new album titled ‘27’, in commemoration of his 27th birthday. Not less than 17 songs were included in the album, including popular hit tracks like ‘Something light’ (remember this one?) and ‘Bahd Bahdo Bahddest.’ He featured other top artistes in Nigeria like Davido, Olamide Badoo, Burna Boy, and Maleek Berry. The album topped the music charts for almost the entirety of 2017, and he continued his dominance into the year 2018.
2018 has been his most controversial year yet. Well, it is hard to see a celebrity in Nigeria who is far from controversy. In 2018, Falz released a controversial song titled ‘This is Nigeria.’ The song was an adapted depiction of ‘This Is America’, another highly-controversial song by American rapper, Childish Gambino. In the song, Falz complained a lot about the various social ills bedevilling our country. He ranted about bribery and corruption, Boko haram, female infanticide in the north, poor welfare, and several other issues. The song was perceived as a precursor to hate speeches and anti-government protests around the country and it was eventually banned from the national airwaves by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC. In his reaction, he affirmed he had intentions of suing NBC because he felt his song was not offensive in any way. Later that same year, he released a new album titled ‘Soft Work’, which has gone around Africa. Other popular songs by him include: ‘Weh Done Sir’, ‘Jeje’, and several others.
Falz has made a name for himself in the Nigerian entertainment scene, with his peculiar accent and creativity. This has earned him several multi-million naira endorsements deals with top multinational companies in Nigeria and all across Africa. He owns a fleet of expensive cars and houses and is known to be a hardworking man. His current net worth is quite difficult to estimate, but it sure stands between $500,000 and $1 million.
