The first political party in Nigeria is the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP). It was formed by Late Herbert Macaulay in 1923. The party was formed as an aggregation of various interest groups that existed in Lagos at the time to create a formidable platform that will compete on the political front.
During the 1922 Lagos Legislative Council elections, the NNDP contested for many seats, out which the party won three. It continued to remain a strong force in Lagos politics until it was defeated in the 1938 elections by the Nigerian Youth Movement (NYM).
For many years, the party’s name remained unmentioned until 1964, when Samuel Ladoke Akintola adopted its name for his party — a move made in a bid to topple the Obafemi Awolowo-led Action Group party.
