The world is now a global village and this have become sophisticated and simple simultaneously. Formerly you’ll need to physically attend a university to get a degree — you have to be present physically, attend classes and write exams with other course mates to graduate.

Nowadays things aren’t etched in stone. It’s not compulsory to attend a “brick and mortar” school to get a graduate degree. With the advent of the internet, things are done less traditionally to some extent. Nowadays you can go to school online, learn, and get a degree after your study.

This is especially helpful if you’re the busy type. If you run a business or are a full time worker, online universities might be your solution to getting a university degree. In addition to this, there’s no discrimination between the certificate you get and the ones others get. The school authority will not indicate it on your certificate that you got it online. You’ll get the same opportunities available to those who attended a “brick and mortar” university.

However, note that not all courses can be taken at an online university. Some courses, especially science or technology oriented ones, require some practicals and workshops. You’ll need to register at a “brick and mortar” university one to get that type of degree.

How Online Universities Work

There are a number of online universities in the world. These universities are more common outside of Nigeria. The National Open University, NOUN, is the only university which comes closest to being one in Nigeria. It offers a lot of distance learning programs and awards bachelor’s degrees.

The sure means of obtaining an online degree for Nigerians is through online universities in other countries. There are a number of them available though, the Universities of Cambridge and Phoenix are good examples.

At online universities, the number of years you study depends on the particular course you’re studying. Most of the courses take about two years but some extend up to four years.

Online students receive lectures online and must be able to study by themselves without assistance from tutors. You need to have a good internet connection and be able to use the computer comfortably in order to be successful. Furthermore you need to possess excellent reading and writing skills as that’s the major avenue you can impress your lecturers.

Although you aren’t required to attend classes physically, you might need to post messages on online class discussion boards from time to time. You’ll also be given assignments which you need to complete and submit within a certain frame of time.

Furthermore, you’ll write your tests and exams online after which your scores will be sent to you. It is very important to have a strong internet reception while writing these exams.

  • Submit the form along with other documents required during the process.
  • After this, you’ll be given a code to track your status and application. If your application is successful, you’ll be contacted by the institution via the email you’ve submitted. They’ll send you details of how you should make payments.
  • Once you’ve completed payment course materials will be sent to you along with class schedules and information about other stuff you need to know about.

Voila! You’re now an online student. Before you opt for an online course however, there are things you need to consider.

Check if the online university is accredited.  Also ensure that they are supportive towards their students.

What are the entry requirements for the course? Are you qualified?

Are you a native English speaker? If the school offers its courses in English language, you might have to write TOEFL before you’re offered admission. Online universities in other countries have a similar arrangement although it might not be an admission requirement.

Are you available? Although the process is quite flexible, you’ll need to be online often to attend lectures and get assignments done.

Do you have the financial muscle? Online courses don’t come cheap.
